I’m late for the party. Should I not even try?

I personally think your chances to get a cancellation will be much higher then thought. A lot of these orders would of went another way or just decided not to go thru with purchase due to the long wait time.. I bet 50% of the ordered cars don't get bought by the person that actually ordered vehicle. You can always find a dealer without markup and once these things start shipping the supply will be there. You will have to shop around but this day and age that is all thru the web. You can still order but likely that will be something someone else buys.

Oh yeah! I can wait! I expect that. I just don’t want to wait til this time next year
Well this time next year they'll be delivering 2023s, you should be done way earlier.

I don't know about "late" next year. I'm pretty sure Tim Bartz said that any orders "now" meaning last week should be delivered by May.
It is still not late in the game. I ordered another hybrid today from another dealer, still no deposit, MSRP price and got a confirmation email from Ford today. Per Mr. Tim, Ford will close the ordering for Maverick by November and will open again in June 2022, if I remember it right. So once choose the best dealer for you, go ahead and make a reservation.
If you don't want to wait, Ecoboost is an option but do not buy the dealer stock, way over priced. The one that I test drive today, Ford Maverick XLT 2.0L AWD with FX4 package cost $39K!

So I recommend you call dealers in your area and ask if they have builds similar to what you want on order. If any of them have multiple orders I would go with them. If there is a cancellation you could just move up in line. But be sure to make sure they will give it to you for MSRP, get a buyers order signed by the dealer.

Hey man don't be worried I was on the fence till I heard the deadline. I got my order in today at 11 am. XLT hybrid in black only added a hitch the spare tire and a moonroof. Dealer said 7 months is what he expects from now.
"on the fence" and you have a picture of a fence. 😅😂🤣
