Hole in tail light lens... does the whole assembly have to be replaced?

I've repaired a tail light on a pickup and a tail light on a trailer that had holes in them using clear sealant. No moisture in 5 years on the truck and 2 years on the trailer. Cosmetically not beautiful. Functional yes.

Yes. $340 on eBay for the Lariat lights. Cheaper for XL/XLT, I think $240.

Due to an unfortunate parking lot incident, I have a hole in my left rear taillight lens.
Does the whole assembly have to be replaced?

I would try welding it first, as an option. Bet I could do a fair job.
