I've noticed this particular issue has been going on periodically for the last month or two. Sometimes when I approach my vehicle, the headlights are illuminated and when I open the door, the chime goes off. What's weird is that it's not the modern Ford chime, it's their older chime from several years ago. What's even weirder is that I do not touch the headlight switch whatsoever. I always have it set on Auto. I never bump it by accident either. But yet somehow, I open the door and am greeted to the older chime screaming at me and acting as if I left the lights on. Then I have to touch the headlight switch in order to turn it off. I'm wondering if this is some type of electrical gremlin or maybe it's some kind of proximity sensor. I have the Lariat with the smart key. It's such a strange issue that I'm not sure is normal or if I should have it checked out.

Does it do it only if the switch is in Auto? Which auto? Correct me if I am wrong, but there are two autos right? One for Auto On and the other for Always On? Figure that out and make a recording of it and send it to the Service Dept. at your dealer. Best of luck.

Check your battery voltage - Things get weird if the battery is starting to fail.

My F150 has two chimes and I don't know why. Been doing this for a while--maybe since new. It'll change chime when the key is inserted and turned.

The auto applies to the setting on the rotary headlight switch towards the driver side of the dash. I never touch it since it's always set to Auto.

Correct. Understood. What I am saying is try setting the headlight switch to a different position to see if the issue can be replicated. One of the rules of trouble shooting is just try one thing at a time and go from there. This way you can give your dealer a little bit of information to help them.
