We did something similar for our two sons. We got them each a new Fiesta to use for college. As long as they were in school, we made the payments. My oldest son's car was paid for by the time he graduated, so he had to get a loan and buy it from us once he started working. He understands he will have to work for this vehicle both academically and monetarily to keep it. Nothing is given in life for free.
My youngest dropped out of college saying it was not for him, so he had to make all the remaining payments.
Doing that ensured they'd have safe, reliable transportation while in school and gave them both a boost getting launched. The oldest has since bought a CPO CX-3 in his own name and with his own loan and the youngest is still driving his Fiesta. because his commute is less than 5 miles each way.
