Same here... but the oversized bolt doesn't bother me at all. Sorry if that's an eyesore for you.
They are FREE! So I have no rights to complain. I feel blessed recieving goodies from DD. Those little aesthetic look can be adjusted/or changed later on.

Despite the sweet-ass lights, my first thought was also "oof that bolt looks a little too close to paintwork for my liking".

Can we assume you received these lights free in return for your "unbiased" review? Or did you purchase them?I was finally able to install a pair of Diode Dynamics SS3 LED PODS SAE in Yellow + backlight. Man o man! These things were built with love. From the quality standpoint and functionality it offers. Hats off to you @Diode Dynamics! I salute you and the rest of your team. The light beams are definitely suited for off-road capability. Did I mention how much I love the backlight option?

I have mine sitting at its lowest setting. You can adjust the height of the lower bottom bracket, and there is enough space for you to slide in a open wrench for me to tighten the protruding "oversized" bolts.

. I have the lower brackets set up at its lowest setting. I preferred mine this way so it's not sticking way up in the air. I guess I did that so the long extended "oversized" bolt has less visibility, but it doesn't bother me at all. They hardware were all included in the kit that I received. I'm still very thankful.

I think they used the "SAE" often in their product titles with the intention to let customers/people know that they're "SAE" approved. 
But you're absolutely right... they're offroad lights. You also have the option to turn on the backlight for city or street driving which I totally love. (See 2nd image).
