You are right about the ad revenue. A friend of mine and I started watching Motor Trend magazine for "truck of the year" around 2007-2011. We kept track for about 4-5 years. We also found a site where we could see who was paying for advertisements in what magazines. Chevy Silverado was truck of the year in 2007. The Tundra was truck of the year in 2008, Ford F-150 in 2009. Ad revenue for those three years was the highest correlation with those that won. You don't pay enough money, you don't get the nod.
Kind of like Better Business Bureau; they give you a good rating if you pay your annual dues.
