Be careful of accessory prep pads

I went to install the Ford accessory hood protector (different brand) this evening that I don’t believe is available anymore…well I had quite a scare as this was the paint after using a prep pad.

It took only 30-60secs for me to realize that this was not a good situation.

Tried a quick detail spray and nothing. Wasn’t coming off. Went straight to the clay bar to see if it didn’t anything, nothing. Went back to just the detail spray and some very aggressive cleaning and it took it off. Im sure the hood is scratched from ‘deep cleaning’ but have to wait until daylight

So it's an adhesive that keeps it on? Used to be under hood screws.

My weathertech hood protector had (and did) something similar. Adit it looked much worse on black finish.

The install instructions said to tape off the area NOT to be prepped. I used some good quality painters tape that prevented the cleaner from going where it shouldn’t.

when install was completed i could not see the prepped area. I trust that was to make sure there was an area that was very ready to accept the mastic on the hood protector and keep it in place..

Geez, that looks like it ruined the paint. So what does one do if they decide they don't want it on the vehicle anymore or change to a smaller or different shaped shield?

Installed the same brand and had the same issue. I immediately cleaned it off with RainX exterior car cleaner. Took a little extra muscle to get it off. Did not seem to get permanent paint damage though.

They still make those as well but the one he is using is a stick on.
