No, it cannot. There are 4 c-clamps that essentially hold the SofTopper frame to bed. The beauty of the Softopper is that it's much like a manual convertible top- up/down in a single minute and it's mostly waterproof. However, it can never be fully secure. It's perfect for my doggos- one of them is a 170 Irish Wolfhound, a big girl that obviously cannot fit in the back seat, but still loves to go on rides with us
