I'm pretty sure if you don't have SYNC, the pass thru feature will be disabled except to make phone calls. "Pass Thru" feature is a Ford feature, not an Android Auto feature. Unless you are talking about tapping the mic symbol on your mobile phone? Is that what you mean?

Nobody said that the onboard modem is used only for Hotspot. What has been explained is that when the free trial ends the onboard modem will still "answer the phone" when your Ford Pass app calls it to remote start the car. As far as software updates all you have to do is connect your home...

You do not have to pay for the remote start feature in the app. Ever! I have had three Fords the past 10 years and I can assure you of this. The AT&T plan is for Wi-Fi hotspot etc. Not for the remote start.
