  1. Alpine Optim8 DSP/Amp - Lane's Review, Thoughts, Results...

I have a build thread where I've detailed all my work on my Mav (full thread starts here, just the audio system starts here), but this is sort of specialized so I thought a separate detailed thread might fit better in this forum. A bit of context - I've been working on audio systems since...
  2. How to Blackout Third Brake Light

I applied some film to the 3rd brake light, photos and details are in my build thread here. End result: Since that film is made specifically for lights, it doesn't significantly diminish the light output. And for those saying you're gonna get rear ended... it probably won't be due to that...
  3. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

Thanks. Yeah, sounds like we have taken very similar routes. Tuning has been coming along, no major ass pains yet. Yes, opening up the bottom of them is key. I have used baffles in another car and have left them fully closed. There is an upside - the small sealed volume of air behind the...
  4. Maverick Over bed toolboxes

Wow, nice DIY work! That describes all of my projects. I think a great end result justifies the time. Plus you did it with your own hands and there is a satisfaction in that which a lot of people who'd rather just open their wallet never enjoy.
  5. Exposed seat belt cable?

This is an inexpensive truck, doesn't surprise me at all. Personally, I appreciate finding things that show they've put thought into designing parts simply and cheaply in order to keep the purchase price low. Dealer? Why? Just fix it yourself in less than a minute by winding some electrical...
  6. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

Last piece of the audio system to install is the amplifier to run the whole works. I had an outstanding Alpine 5-channel Class D amp left over from a prior vehicle just waiting to be used in the Mav. I started shopping for a DSP to add but wanted some very specific features - auto tuning that...
  7. Adjustable Head Rests

Would these do what you're looking for?
  8. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

On to the next piece of the audio system - the front speakers. A Polk Audio 6-1/2" component set will be going in, one that's been with me for a long time and has seen several cars. Reusing equipment that I already have means more to spend on the parts that I don't. 😁 In starting to take...
  9. Which tonneau cover - your opinion?

I had a retractable on a prior truck. It worked great, except for the canister taking up too much of the front part of the bed. Then winter came, and it no longer worked so great. If you park outside and get any amount of snow, the thaw causes water to get in the rails, under the side seals...
  10. volksnuts’ Lariat Maverick build

Might seem a little counter-intuitive, but when the vehicle is running, any additional batteries will put more of a load on the alternator which has to charge them. Read more on the topic here. Generally, a battery should be just to start the vehicle, and the alternator is to provide power for...
  11. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

I haven't written it up in detail yet but it feels like the install isn't quite done yet. With the current 5" drop all around, I've done about 6000 miles of varied driving and have heard/felt the tires rub the wheelwell liners only twice. I have an intermittent odd noise from one of the front...
  12. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

I'd been watching eBay for a while, trying to find some vintage Polk Audio 4", or even 4x6" speakers from their early Mobile Monitor series. Mainly because I'd love the rear speakers to be in the same family as the component set I'll be installing in front (more on that later). Unfortunately, no...
  13. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

With the subwoofer enclosure being a sizable effort and getting that done, it was time to start working on the next item that will take some time & effort as well. I love Polk Audio speakers, and I've had them in most of the cars I've owned since the early 1990s. In fact, speakers of that...
  14. Wheel bearing rust - day 1

Put the center caps back on?
  15. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

So I got a curious spell and really wanted to know - even though the seat foam should now be less of an obstruction (after being cyclops'd) when it comes to the loudness level of the sub, how much will it still reduce its volume? Or will it be negligible like I was hoping? Just for sh*ts &...
  16. fiberglass 12" sub enclosure behind rear seatback

Oh yeah, definitely. But I wish newer meant better, but it often doesn't. Seems like a company will get better at making things more cheaply, and making those cheaply-constructed things sound pretty decent. A selling point like that doesn't make it compelling enough to me as a consumer so I...
  17. fiberglass 12" sub enclosure behind rear seatback

There will always be a better sub than the one you own. I've been caught up in "better" before and it led to a system in a prior car where I'd almost put in more time, money, and effort than what I paid for the car new. I'd competed in USAC and IASCA for sound quality with the system in this...
  18. What is behind your back seat?

I built a fiberglass enclosure and put a 12" subwoofer back there. There are a ton more photos and a write-up of the process in my build thread (or click here for page 4 to skip directly to the enclosure build).
  19. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

Thank you. Way too many hours, but I do that on a lot of projects. I'd rather do that than build something half-ass and regret it later. Spending a good amount of time on something does feel like it improves the end result and I appreciate it more. Yes, researching DSPs right now, haven't...
  20. Lane's Dark Soul XL Build (lowered w/ Silver's, 19" wheels, Zep BAP, audio...)

It's Pioneer model TS-SW3002S4. The image below is from the owner's manual. I bought it at least 7 years ago so it may no longer be a current model. I do see them available on eBay though. It is impressively shallow. Here's a comparison to a typical 12".
