Actually it was based on a Fiat so it was my as odd as many thought. The factory was bombed out of existence or it may have survived to be improved much like the Hyundai cars that came out about the same time. I have owned two Smart Cars as well! Loved them!
I put over 80,000 miles on my Yugo. Only failure in that span was the mechanical fuel pump failed at about 60,000 miles. replaced it with a $30.00 electric. Worked as a tech at a Mercedes dealer at the time!

No. OP is correct. Mine does the same thing. No intrusion until you open the door. Then the water that has pooled in the weather strip runs all over the plastic trim just inboard of the door threshold. I just chalked it up to an entry level truck and wipe it off.
