So, it happened. I got hit from behind by a Ram 2500. Not highway speeds, not enough to pop any airbags, but enough that my tailgate could no longer open and had to be cut off to replace it. Hard enough that it bent my trailer hitch.
But square-on enough that it didn't take any frame damage...
Just what it looks like to me. The Ford branded OEM is a bak revolver x2, branded with Ford logos. If I'd known the x4 was an option, I probably would have gotten it - even without the logo - for exactly this felt-falling-off reason.
My problem was twofold.
First, it looks like there was some overspray from LineX, which was causing the unlock mechanism to not completely disengage.
Second, we had gotten a piece of mulch in the latch mechanism.
