I agree with you in principle. Modern oil, and modern engines are way better and the intervals required are higher. I don't think I know better than the engineers that designed the engine. To play devil's advocate however, I will argue that it is worth spending more on oil changes for peace...

EB is more capable and will cost the average driver $1500/year above the hybrid. Probably not too big of a deal for many drivers, especially those that wanted AWD or 4k.
I would easily drop a lot of things that require microprocessors. But not heated seats. I need an ECU to run the engine, ordinary cruise control, a really great stereo, heated seats, and anti-lock brakes. I don't need lane centering, adaptive cruise control, headlights that sense oncoming...
I live in Normal, IL where they are built and they really are jarring when you see them with their lights on. It's a very unique look and not really in a good way.
