I’m not using this platform to complain or anything. I would just like some guidance as I’ve never owned a brand new car before.

The issue is my parking brake randomly comes on and I’m unable to take the parking brake off and drive my vehicle for 20-30 minutes

It did it maybe 3 times last summer, going to work the brake would come on when I’d be in park sitting in the parking lot about to walk into work. When I’d come out of work I’d be able to drive my maverick again.

The 3rd and final time it did it last summer, It did it at my house and I needed to go to work so I called the Ford Roadside assistance in the app, by the time he got there, the truck had “reset” and I was able to drive it. The roadside guy said it’s fine to drive and it was a quirk in the maverick. He said to let it sit for a bit and after a while the issue will clear and I can drive it again.

So it didn’t do it anymore last year.

This summer rolls around. (Starting to figure out the pattern, it does it when it’s hot) and the truck does it multiple times, I call the service department of the dealership I bought my truck and explain to him what happens and I asked him to please fix it and to please fix my recalls.

He called me back and told me he couldn’t recreate the parking break issue. But possibly one of the recalls that he fixed could solve the issue. I told him it does it when it’s hot and I drive around a lot. He said he would take my truck home that night and drive it to see if he could recreate it. He called back next day and said he couldn’t recreate the issue. So I picked my truck up hoping the fixed recalls solved it.

It hasn’t, it’s done it a few more times since then. It’s not a huge deal, as it always does “reset” and I’m able to drive it again. I’m just worried I’m going to be out in an unfamiliar place or it’s going the brakes will engage in a time other than when the gear is in parked.

Does anyone have any suggestion on what to do, or have you heard of anything similar to this? If the service department can’t recreate the issue I’m not sure how they could even fix it. So I’m not mad about it I get it, I’d just like some advice from someone who’s had the same issue.

Thank you very much.

Are you not able to release the parking brake when this happens? What happens when you try to release the brake?

Also, when the parking brake becomes stuck like this - have you tried just putting the truck in gear and driving? The parking brake will normally release automatically when the truck is placed in gear and the gas pedal is applied as long as the driver door is closed. I am curious if that system is also failing...

Completely unable to turn off parking brake. I can only drive the truck when it “resets itself”

I have put the truck in gear, and pushed the gas with doors closed. It’ll Rev up for a second but and it’s a very soft rev but the truck will not move.

Wow that is a bug. I would start making a video every time this happens, and in every video be thorough in demonstrating the problem and in particular that it is not operator error (ie doors *are* closed, foot *is* depressing the brake pedal etc). Hopefully it gets the dealer to become more interested in finding and fixing the problem, but if nothing else it could be used if you ever have to force the issue with Ford

Since your issue isn't getting much traction here I googled it and by and large p brakes issues involved a dash display warning.
Only thing I could find. Wouldn't hurt to try.

Is this what you mean this is from the last time it did it, totally forgot I took the picture. Which this time it happened at night, it was a very hot day but by the time it happened it did cool down. So I don’t really know I guess. I showed all of this to the ford service person.

That picture may be worth a thousand words, from my knowledge and experience I would say you have more of a gearshift input concern than a park brake concern, the park brake issue is just a by-product. It appears that some module-probably the ABS which controls park brake function, doesn't like what it is seeing from the GSM and therefore it probably will not release the park brake because it could be a safety hazard as it can't tell what gear it is in if it happened to be in neutral. I see you have a 2022 Hybrid, I found a special service message that pertains to concerns with the GSM(gearshift module, which is your gearshift knob: there's a module on the backside). Although the ssm doesn't call out the concern you are experiencing, it states that there may be a software problem with the GSM and that it should be replaced IF the truck was built on or before January 25th of 2022. The specific concern which would justify replacing it is a wrench light illumination and a code store in the GSM (P0929:77 ). If you would like to send me a private message with your VIN, I can check and see if any codes have been set that your dealer may have overlooked if you have your FordPass and Vehicle Health Report turned on.

yes thank you very much I will send you anything you need as soon as I get off work. I really appreciate it. I do have ford pass and I told the dealer that it would send me notifications as well. I had no idea they could check that. Thank you very much!

This happened with our Hyundai Sonata, since we never had a kind of parking brake before, found that depressing the foot pedal brake released it! You may have a different outcome. Also on my push button start Hyundai Kona the same thing you really have to depress the brake pedal..

Well, as I suspected they are missing the boat at your dealer , here is a screen shot of the codes that have recently set in your vehicle, the P097B code is for "shift solenoid B circuit open" This is undoubtedly why you are having park brake issues, as I stated before, if the ABS is not getting what it needs to see from the transmission, it will not release the park brake. There is a wiring check pinpoint test that needs to be performed for this code, and if all checks good in the wiring they would be directed to replace the ISC(integrated system controller) which is located on the side of the E-CVT transmission. That code first tripped on June 26th and it has tripped several times since accompanied with a couple other transmission fault codes for " park pawl control motor circuit(P272C), and "stuck in park( P07E6) so for sure there is something going on with either circuitry wiring or that ISC.

Awesome I appreciate you looking into this for me. It’s going to be so nice getting this fixed and it’s all because of you!
