Uncle Mud needs a new Mudmobile. The Prius Pickup with its beefed up jeep springs and lift kit continues to serve faithfully, schlepping buckets of cob (sandy clay and straw) to job sites near and far, but it is approaching 250k miles. The hybrid Ford Maverick caught our eye as a potential replacement, enough so that we have ordered one and put down a deposit, but we really wanted to see one before shelling out $25,000. It really is better than i imagined--and I have a good imagination. It has enough space so it doesn't feel like the front seat and the back seat are fighting over that three inches of leg room. I also really like the low liftover for the bed sides and tailgate because I lift buckets of mud for a living. The sides of the F-150 come up to my chin and even the slightly elevated Lariat edition of the Maverick is below nipple height. I also like the price. Ours came to about $25k. That's less than a recent hybrid Highlander with 100k miles on it. Maybe someday I will be able to afford the Ford Lightning or Tesla Pickup I've been lusting after, but even a mid level F-150 lists for half again more than my first house did and still only gets 20ish mpg. So keep an eye out. Maybe you'll see me (and a Maverick) covered with mud on our way to build a pizza oven.
