Allow me to initially state have owned an XL hybrid for just shy of seven months now and don't drive all that much, passing a grand total of 400 miles since I first picked up the truck as of yesterday. Have let it sit idle in the garage for two or even three weeks at a stretch and, although intermittently the dome lights will not come on afterwards when door is opened, it starts right up and runs normally.
Probably a function of the on board computer(s) still crunching data and tweaking things in accordance with driving habits, the on screen instant trip readout for mpg numbers have consistently been less than what was expected since day one (generally range anywhere from 24.5 to 36 mpg). That said, still on track to get over 500 miles on a tankful, so that's why I attribute the variance to a learning curve rather than anything mechanically suspect.
Yesterday, however, was especially bizarre. On the trip into town (about 12 miles, mostly downhill from about 1100 feet elevation to sea level) to pick up a few things ordered with Ford Pass points which had arrived at the dealer the instant readout when engine was shut off reported an astonishing 112.5 mpg. Trip uphill back home (same route) the instant readout when shut off the engine was 26 mpg. Same density of traffic and frequency of red lights going both ways, using Normal mode and with A/C turned on both ways, maximum speed of 55 mph on what passes for a highway here (the speed limit), anywhere from 30 - 45 mph in town. Only thing maintenance related done was the crankcase recall, performed at the dealership earlier this month.
Go figure. Not particularly concerned about this, as the miles per tank are in line with expectations.
