Hello,

I was interested in the XL hybrid model since it first was introduced, but could never get one at MSRP, and whenever there was any incoming stock they were quickly sold. To complicate things further the lack of availability for hybrids always gave the sales team leverage over me. Fast forward two years, and a used 2022 XLT Hybrid quietly became available, it wasn't listed (because it just got in), but it was the alternative the salesperson offered since he could not sell me a new XL Maveric at MSRP. It looked from the outside in relatively good condition, and with 14 k miles it seemed okay. However, why would a 2-year-old Maverick only have 14,660 miles on it, maybe the driver didn't commute very often. I also noticed there were no accessories, not even PPF or mud flaps. It seemed the original owner did not intend to own this very long, otherwise he would've invested in some sort of protection. The only visible wear was the driver's door panel had scuff marks on the bottom, a chip on the hood lip located at the front at the grille gap, another chip behind the hood in front of the passenger wiper arm, a few small scratches on the passenger side of the hood and a few deep scratches in the bed. No leaks, no dents, stains, and no pet or tobacco odors.

The conundrum...
Dealer asking price was $28 k, which would be $4 k over the old MSRP back in 22 (window sticker MSRP $23,955). It's so odd how inflation and shortages have made used car prices go up, so much for deprecation. Thinking about it, a new hybrid at several Ford dealers would charge me 5k to 20% over MSRP. Used hybrids with low miles also seem to sell over 30k. I'm not very good at negotiating and I hate haggling, hence the reason I always walked away for the last 2 years. However, I did manage to get the price down to $27 k, with 747.82 in fees (Registration/Plates $283, Title Fee $106, Dealer Doc Fee $205 plus $45 e-file fee, Corporate Activity Tax $108.82). There also was one year left on the bumper-to-bumper factory warranty. After staring at the wall and realizing someone else will come along and buy it if I walk out, I agreed to the total purchase price / out of the door price at $ 27,746.82. Quietly I shake my head, after all this time, I still managed to pay over MSRP.

Finance...
Later, after meeting the finance manager he immediately wanted to add another $700/month for a maintenance plan which I turned down. He said something about the headlights which got my attention, but I didn't say anything. Later I learned the headlights are sealed and the whole assembly has to be ordered and not just the bulb. Plus, the grille and bumper have to be removed in order to assess the bolts holding the headlights in. I put $15 k down, and got it financed through my local credit union at 6.64 % for 48 months. Monthly payment $303.94

Taking it home...
I checked the fluids when I got home, it completely slipped my mind that I should've done it before I left. The coolant was at the minimum level, just like it was when I first saw it before it got inspected. Oddly enough they refilled the washer fluid. So far so good. I checked the recall on the Ford website, and it shows the 2 recalls weren't done yet, at least one of them has a software update. I should've asked about it before I left.

Day 2... the powertrain issue headache
I'm on my way to work and driving at low speeds, the car seemed to stall / lose power. A yellow wrench icon appeared on the dash and a message "Service Soon." I stopped with someone behind me, but I was able to quickly stop the car and restart without getting into an accident. Everything went back to normal, crisis averted. Ford pass shows "Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power." I get to work without any further issues. However, I get off work at 3:30 am and then I get the same issue immediately when starting the car. Ford pass shows same message. I sent a message to the salesperson informing him of my issue, I also called the service department (3 weeks availability) and called another Ford dealership which can look at the car in 1 week. I book the appointment with the other dealer, but the salesperson manages to jump the line at his dealership and get it scanned by the service manager. He finds nothing wrong, and clears the codes, he thinks it's due to car sitting in the dealer back lot. I still keep the appointment at the other dealership but move the date out 2 weeks, since there's no codes for them to look at, it will also give me time to cancel if there are no further issues.

Day 4...
Everything seems fine, no issues so far, and its great driving a car without any issues. However, I noticed in sport mode the car lurches forward when accelerating, which is kind of jarring. Anyway, instant regret slowly starting to creep in, with the anxiety the powertrain issue could come back. The LED headlights also has me worried, its illegal in Oregon to drive with only 1 headlight, how long do these LED headlights last? How quickly can I get a new part and replaced? To make myself feel better and to distract myself I purchased floor liners for the front, mud flaps, and hood deflector.

First of all, I think you got the best bang for the buck Maverick. You should get the extended Ford warrantee from Grander Ford including the headlight coverage $37 extra. The warrantee is transferable when you sell the truck, so the next owner won't have to worry. You will get a better price from a private sale. Go for a 10 year policy with what ever mileage coverage you will need. All policys start from the day the truck first went into service. (day it was first sold) Stop worrying and have fun!

I think you did ok. A 24 xl hybrid with nothing on it is 27+k if you order it. You got xlt hybrid with 21+ miles on the warranty. Don' think about prices from two years ago, think about todays prices and 42 mpg.

I also think you did OK. 14.000 miles is just getting broken-in.
The lurching in sport mode, is just the motor(electric) kicking in. I expect that that is what I will experience, since I haven't used Sport-mode yet, on my 2022 XL Eco in the 15+ months and 7200 miles that I have had mine.
The LED lights are whats current. And Yes, everything is "Modular" so replacing a part is a Whole assembly these days.
Have it checked-out as you have planned. But, in the meantime.. Enjoy your NEW ride... ;)
