In my "Heyday" (Late 1980's-Early 1990's) Ford called it SVO = Special Vehicle Operations..

Don’t forget the HiPo as in the days of the early mustang 289HiPo. It was a stang with 289 with solid lifters had like 290 horses as opposed to standard 289 which I think was 225 or so.

I believe the HIPO 289 was the first factory 1 horse per cube motor.

To this day I still feel like Ford should make an ST version. Use the 2.3 with the twin turbo and get out of the way. Hell it would do better than putting the 2.3 turbo in the Explorer as they are.

Yep. Mean little engine. I had a 64 fairlane 500 sport coupe that had a 289HiPo in it. I bought it as a used project car. It had a 260 emblem on fenders and engine sounded like crap. I had a friend tell me it need new lifters thinking they were a bad hydraulic. When we went in to replace them we discovered solid lifters. Some one had swapped out original 260. I found the block vin# and went back to local ford dealer to return hydraulic lifters and was told that # was for a 289HiPo block. That was only car I ever got a speeding ticket in. Finally sold it a few years later for a nice profit.
