I'm glad I have a 2022 Ford Maverick. I don't know what Ford was thinking do this to the front end of the 2025. I have been a Ford man all my life, but this could push me in a different direction. I will have to see what the future brings in small pickups.
Take pliers , go straight on get both squares and turn. After that you can slide it out the slot. I removed all of mine and only ruined the first one trying to figure out how remove them. Replacements on Amazon and ebay .

You definitely need to remove the bottom shields and wheel liners to have it done right. They are very easy to remove and replace. It can not be coated right with them on.

I see you live in Texas. I have lived in Wisconsin for 69 years and believe me, if you are planning on keeping your vehicle more than five years, you better do something to protect it or it will cost you dearly. Once the rust starts there is nothing that stops it. You can only try to slow it down.

This was mainly about the shields under the body ( not the shield under the engine ).
I have decided to rust proof and reinstall bottom liner shields for warranty purpose. Will be checking in the winter to see what happens.
