For me, the block heater doesn't make a difference. If it's cold enough, the truck does it regardless. I think it has to do with the temperature at the intake The only thing I've found is to idle it for less than 10 minutes. Or switch it into neutral from park when it starts surging.

Seems to be happening every morning now. I made an appointment at the dealership on Monday to leave it there overnight so they can cold start it in the morning. I'll update you guys on what they find.

Do you have an update? My truck did this this morning too. Seemed like it was working real hard and definitely a strong burning smell. It was -20°C and I started it with the key to warm up. Most days I warm up with auto start, but not today.
