I have the same year and model of Maverick and it also bugs me to no end. If i want the AC on I can make that decision on my own, yet some Ford engineer decided that it will start no matter the temperature. Frustrating to have it auto start when it is below 10C (50F) and I want heat.

mine has the same gap from the cab. Yet it seems to be completely (for now) water tight. We have had some torrential rain storms and so far it is dry. It does trap snow and ice though and it would have been better if it went right up to the cab. The tailgate fit is nice, might have gotten lucky...
