I'm in Michigan and decided to go with undercoating and rust proofing. My trade was 19 years old (purchased new) and it had some rust issues so I decided to add the protection. If I can keep mine for 20 years I will have paid less than $50 a year. Cheap insurance in my book.
In the 50's my father had a new Mercury that had engine problems. No one could figure out the problem. The engine was replaced under warranty and when the old one came out the factory rep took a sledgehammer to the block. Problem solved. :-}
I don't believe they are undercoated. After spending the coin for a new vehicle (our trade-in was 19 years old) we decided it would be worth it. Undercoating and rustproofing was almost $800.
If I remember correctly there was a collaborative effort between Kal-Aero (that specialist in Michigan) and the EAA at the time. I think the EAA had some jigs but not all of the parts to make the missing pieces. (They had one to rebuild also.)
I too have driven FWD vehicles for many years. (My other car is a FWD Aveo I've had for 13 years.) The only tires I've had are all weather and haven't had any problems. When the factory supplied tires wear out that's what I will go to.
