Average car price is $50,000. Maverick is as budget as you can get. It's the cheapest hybrid vehicle you can buy. Even the lariat is gimped to hit the price point. If someone is disappointed in the maverick, I would argue expectations were set too high :).

Unfortunately those are screws and not bolts sticking out. There is no nut that will thread to them. Something like a Starlock washer might work but the screws sticking out are very brittle. Ask me how I know :p.
