This is pretty true with the EcoBoost too. In most of my driving, ECO mode will improve my MPG's about 1 mile per gallon. If I have a lot of city driving, it doesn't make really any difference. Not worth the performance drop.
But Sport mode does negatively affect my MPG's much more noticeably.

Normal - Blue Background
ECO - Light Blue/Green Background
SPORT - Red Background
Towing - Lighter Blue Background
Slippery - Lightest Blue Background
Sand - Light Tan Background with wisps of sand hills on side
Mud/Ruts - Brown Background...
To be fair though, towing with my full size Lincoln pickup caused the gas mileage to halve. So you could absolutely say that towing with a gas engine can cause the range to be cut in half. But, the range can be regenerated in 5 minutes.
