The USS building in Pittsburgh was designed to rust. As previously mentioned, many other parts will fail before the spindle will. But yes, it is a tad fluorescent!
Actually, leaving it off will reduce the effectiveness of the air conditioning. It changes the airflow to a degree. How much is just a guess but the engineers were forced to do this in order that a/c and cooling system components could be smaller, lighter, hence less expensive for production...
My bottle Ford sent me after the airbag recall falls out as well. I don't slam the door but it seems that after a dozen or more closings of the door, it falls out onto the floor. Another over educated engineer designed this.
My most annoying complaint is how big of a blind spot there is created by the driver's side A pillar. May be my height or seating position, but it is something that I find somewhat troublesome.
I could be wrong, but isn't that the same or very similar to what is used on the Escape? It would be a half hour job max to change it once you got one off eBay or a junk yard.

I undercoated mine myself and prior to spraying it, I wrapped every plug and sensor with aluminum foil and removed it when I was done. No issues so far, almost a year.
Nitrogen is used in aircraft tires to preclude expansion of the tires on retractible gear aircraft so that they won't expand in the gear wells causing interference. Totally unnecessary in cars and trucks.
