One of the reason is Exhaust Gas Recirculation. (EGR) Nitric acid doesn't form directly inside the EGR valve itself, but it can be a consequence of the NOx (nitrogen oxides) gases that the EGR system is designed to reduce.

Some cars have gas fill point on the passenger side. It pulled in after another car left. I was at pump #14 here:

I had my Maverick two weeks before finding out it had a fake engine noise. o_O

I had to replaced the heater core when it leaked out on to the passenger floor. The flapper valve is right next to the heater core.
