Are you using Apple maps? Google has a setting for "prefer fuel-efficient routes" that is separate from avoid highways and tolls. Not sure if Apple has the same thing.
Mine would occasionally get raised when the tailgate was lowered and would prevent the tailgate from closing.
So I moved it to the older hole the other day and have not had any issues yet.

Yes, you will want a tool to pop the current plastic covers off. I would also use a towel or something like that to sit between the prybar and the paint.
Mine does too but I like it that way. I have had ones that engage from the start and it feels like they take forever to drop. The one I have slows down the most important part and that is all that matters.
I wouldn't worry. Mine was in deep sleep when I took it off the lot. It hadn't been driven much and had sat for a bit on the lot. Once I drove home everything was fine and I haven't seen any other indication of deep sleep
