Uh, maybe the sediment settled at the bottom of the filter, something caused the bypass valve to open, and the sediment (which, if settled at the bottom of the filter, would be sitting right in front of the bypass valve) made its way "back inside?"

Well thank you.. I do not know the oil flow direction through a filter but after reading this, in the name of science, I went and bought one of the filter openers.. pics below. For anyone who cares, the findings are; not much sediment but it's there and indeed only on the "outside" facing...

FL910-S is the standard sized filter recommended in the service manual, which is indeed larger than the oil filter our vehicles shipped with

The pics were after everything was combined (the oil from the filter and the oil drained from the engine) I didn't mean to imply the shavings had escaped the filter and were circulating through the engine.. without examining the oil exclusive of the oil from the filter I guess I still don't know...

Sorry they might have been. Didn't think about it ahead of time, dumped the oil filter oil in with the rest, but the pics came at the end when I was emptying everything back into the container

Yes indeed I did. Not on purpose, I just had a handful of oil, an open container and didn't think to separate the 2 til we talked about it. Kinda just meant to throw up a post about changing the oil and what I'd find. I can see how it's misleading though, we can't tell if those shavings were...

No magnet.. I did look at the bolt from the engine pan, but it doesn't seem to have a magnet on it..

Any suggestions for cutting open the filter without Edited, thank you. I have indeed kept the filter but didn't have the time to open it yet.. Any suggestions on cutting it open while minimizing flakes from the outer can, so they won't be confused for shavings from the oil?
