I think your steel trailer is a LOT heavier than 800#. My aluminum was 500# before adding the spare tire, brakes and stabilizers. I think steel trailers are more like 1600#.

I keep a step inserted into the hitch receiver and it may keep creepers off of my bumper! It's plastic and light. Very stable and tight in the receiver. Easy enough to change to my ball mount kept in the back. And cheaper if they really want to steal my step! :cwl: Link...
