Gotcha, makes sense. For me, however, the hitch is the way to go as I will do bike-camping road trips as you mentioned. I don't bike so often.
On the pad, I wonder about the scratchings that it may do to the paint. It definitively looks easier to use, but thinking it may scratch the paint...
Yup! Or why not just buy a bike rack that connects to the hitch? There are plenty out there. Then you can use the bed to carry other stuff for that road trip!

Yes I did, the guy stayed for about an hour only so it was a quick stop. Sharing a few pics. It was a AWD. Pretty much just we've seen on other pics. I did noticed the front grille flaps that seems to open/close when needed so took a pic of that as best as I could.
