Yes 50 is the max BUT you go 35psi as it says on the door because as you drive the pressure increases so if you start at 45 getting over 50psi happens quickly. I go by the door it's worked well for me for decades:)

Plus if he gets into an accident the insurance company will have denied the claim because "legally" it is an unregistered vehicle. This is a tough spot for him, hopefully he gets it resolved quickly.
