I think whats more important is learning how to properly load your trailer so that sway doesnt happen in the first place.
Then it solves all the problems with the system being on or off.

Depending on your year and trim level:
Press the menu button on the steering wheel (Three line button on the right side of steering wheel)
In the instrument cluster screen:
Scroll down to trailer.
Check or uncheck Trailer sway control.

Hell I came from a 07 ford ranger that got a whopping 18 mpg highway (3.0 Vulcan.) Out of the box this thing so far is getting 34mpg.
Needless to say, Im tickled pink and its only day 1.
