somewhere above, but I can't find it again, was the comment that the dealer can't change the doc fee. This is by law in some states (including mine) to prevent discrimination.

When the local dealer matched Granger on my order, they reduced the sales price to make up for their higher doc fee.

Another note: if salesman pulls out a sheet of paper and draws lines to make quarters, take a hard line in advance. It's what they call a "four square", and they use it to work backwards from what you said you wanted as a payment to an excessive price an interest rate.

I've actually told a couple, "if I see a four square, I'm walking."

The only thing to discuss is price. Tradein and any financing come after price is established.

I once, to my surprise, found that they could arrange an interest rate from US Bank .1% below the credit I was going to use.

Which brings up, have your credit actually arranged before dealign with the dealers. If they can offer a better deal, sobeit (but on my maverick, they declined to bother when I said I had the check from Navy Federal with me!)
