Turning Radius... Why is it so bad?

Non issue. Most u- turns here are illegal.

Are sharp turns and maneuvering in parking garages/lots illegal there as well? Turning radius is also going to impact things like that.

Well I think turning radius is a lot better than the PT Cruiser that I had. It also shorter than the Maverick.

The turning radius of my Maverick is like a dream after driving a Tundra for 7 years. I'm guessing the OP is not coming from a half ton or bigger truck.

The 2 dr Bronco has a wheelbase of 100", should turn a lot sharper than 121" wheelbase. The 4 dr Bronco with a 116" whb shows a turn circle of 35.5' about inline with the Maverick's 40'.

The funny thing about this thread is how Jim Farley has said multiple times, "American needs to fall back in love with smaller vehicles". In fairness, the "small truck" Maverick program was probably defined before he started as CEO.

Hmm, let's do the math. Maverick released in 2022 model year. Ford said Maverick was a 3 year development time (they bragged that it was a year shorter than normal, which led to quality issues). So say they started the Maverick in 2018 or 2019. Yup, Jim Farley started at least a year after the Maverick program was launched. He became CEO in 1 Oct 2020.

So anyway, the Maverick is a bloated fat pig when compared to true small trucks. But it is a svelte little ballerina when compared to bigger trucks. So pick your frame of reference and call it a fat pig or a dainty ballerina. How each owner feels about it is all that matters.

The worst turning radius I've experienced was our 91 Lumina. It'd take a 4-point turn anywhere. The best is our 20 RAV4; I'm always surprised how sharp it turns.

Anything with front drive axles is automatically limited in steering angle because of the CV joints. Then you factor in the wheelbase, and that's the biggest limit to turning radius. The Maverick is in normal specs given it's architecture.

2 streets over from my house, a neighbor has a V10 excursion lifted on 35s. I believe he probably just drives over curbs whenever the turning radius requires it.

The Mav has a 40' turning circle. The only other vehicle in its class is the Hyundai Santa Cruz with a turning circle of 41'. Comparing with the larger midsize trucks, the new Ranger is 43', the first-gen Ranger was 42' and the second gen was 38', the GMC Canyon is a bit over 41', the Toyota Tacoma is 46' and the Nisan Frontier is 43'.
Offhand, I don't see what the problem is. Its not a bicycle.

So, after driving the Maverick for almost a year and a half, the one thing that continues to irk me is that it seems to have the turning radius of a whale. Any particular reason it is so big? I often have trouble making u-turns on the first go.

I have had many cars over the years (including a couple of land yachts from the '70's) and I have never had a vehicle that turns so wide.

Is it due to the combination of FWD and the extra hybrid gear under the hood?

My 22 Maverick replaced a 17 Frontier 4 door p/u. It is superior to the Frontier's turning radius. That was the worst.

True. I'm coming from a 2007 Colorado that could do a u turn in a phone booth.
