I haven't been up mosquito, but from what I've read, it sounds more challenging than hermit. Hermit was enough for me to confirm the Tremor package was worth the spend.
Yep, honestly I wouldn’t try it again with a mav, it’s dicey.

I'm also not an experienced off roader...i'm sure someone who knows what they're doing could really go some places.

years ago on the 4th of July we went off up in the mountains somewhere between Hesperus and Mancos in a Ford Aerostar of all things. Did ok for 5-6 miles then it started hailing on us and it kept getting worse and worse the further up we went. so somehow I turned it around and came back down and had a great breakfast in Mancos and drove over to an old mine up above Silverton. Ended up making a big loop through Ouray and Telluride. Beautiful country but had to give up those mountain trips after having heart surgery.
The mountains are fun but I will say my wife did have some breathing issues up there after having lung damage from radiation therapy. It really started to get to her up there.

Where I live in eastern Arkansas the altitude is about 200ft, so the mountains are a big challenge to me now days. When I was a young, after a day or so to acclimate to the altitude no problems. My uncle who lived out there, would take us up in the mountains panning for gold and just to explorer. Been up as high as about 14,000 ft, but after heart surgery 8,000ft about it and I can feel it at 4,000-5,000ft.

Awesome! I'll have to keep this one in mind...the San Juan mountains are my favorite in CO.
My wife and I LOVE the San Juan Skyway. For those who don’t know, it’s a network of off-road trails in the San Juan National Forest (Southwest Colorado). We’ve done most of them with 2WD vehicles in the summer and enjoy seeing the beautiful views as well as the last of the ghost towns and mines up there. A few aren’t accessible via 2WD, but if you’re experienced enough you can get over most of the trails. I got a few incredulous looks when I took a Toyota Corolla over Ophir Pass 😂.

I'll add it to my to-do list! I love that corner of the state. I'm working on a goal (a long way from completion) to summit all 58 CO 14ers so I'll definitely be finding my way back there before long.

My dad’s family was from that area of Colorado. He was raised on a homestead just outside of Pleasant View. I’ve got cousins still in the area over around Delores. My uncle lived in Farmington NM and when we visited in the summer we’d head up that way and go up in mountains to camp and pan for gold.

Duh! I should read the post before going to the pics! I have an XLT with the off-road package hopefully coming. If you were scraping that Tremor, an extra inch or so will be pretty significant! Looks like I'll be researching lift kits next. Then maybe wheels. And tires. Uh-oh, it'll never end. $$$
Been pretty happy with the H/R lift springs- My front end would have been lost already if not lifted here in Utah - Cheers

Less than 3 weeks after taking delivery of my '23 Lariat Tremor and I put her to the test. Didn't capture the worst of it as I was focused on wheel placement and dodging suitcase size rocks, but anyone familiar with CR 160 outside of Westcliffe, CO can verify, it's a rough go. "The road has frequent switchbacks, tight turns, and stream crossings. Despite starting off as a gentle incline, the road quickly becomes very rocky and technically challenging...high clearance 4x4 recommended". It was a slow go at 1-3mph up to Hermit Lake at 11,314 feet.

Saw just as many people hiking the road as driving, but the Mav hung with the jeeps, TRDs and side by sides...some baffled looks on people's faces, but I was really impressed with how well it did.

Wheel placement was key. Scraped the skid plates and bottomed out a couple times.
good post.
