I decided to give my hybrid a try for a lumber run yesterday, since this order was on the smaller side compared to what I usually do. I've always used either my F350 or my cargo van in the past, oftentimes with a 22' flatbed, but I didn't need all that much space this time.

It ended up being a little more volume than I anticipated, but my bed cover could handle the excess, which is good, because the last panel doesn't flip up.

I could feel the extra weight a little bit on the trip home, and the back end sat a little low, but everything worked out. I'm not sure what the total weight was, but I had 8 sheets of 3/4 ply, 4 sheets of 1/2, 21 sheets of 1/4 lauan, 15 1x4x8 and 8 2x4x8. That's probably close to the max I should be hauling with this truck, and maybe a little over, but it didn't complain one bit.

My other vehicles are definitely more capable, but I like having another option for stuff like this. And my Maverick is just so nice to drive.

I remembered to get a few pics after I took all the straps off, if you're curious.

As long as you stick to the weight limit you should be good.

Did you use any of the slots in the bed with the 2x6 cross braces to support it? Or just put all the weight on the wheel wells and tailgate? I’m wondering if a plywood load needs more bracing underneath?

I didn't use any braces, just went right on the wheel wells. Looks like they handled it just fine.

I might consider using braces with thinner plywood, but I think thicker stuff is fine.

Wow.
Thank you for remembering to take pictures before you unloaded. This removes all doubt of the Mavericks capabilities. Especially the tailgate in the secondary position for 4x8 sheets without any additional supporting structures.
Plus you had a little room underneath the plywood to put shorter smaller stuff.
Great photographic testament to Mavericks capabilities.
👍👍👍👍👍
Take Care

Any concern about the rear window and safety during an sudden stop? Even with straps.
If it is strapped correctly there shouldn't be a huge concern, but I wouldn't want to travel over 50MPH with a load like that sitting on top of the bed cover. Under the right conditions it sure could go flying through the window into the cab, but I would be more worried about someone travelling behind them.

My cover has attachment points for straps right on it, so the stuff on top wasn't going anywhere. I drove a half hour to get home, mostly at 75mph, and nothing moved one bit.

Great info. For an additional take on volume, I got a 1+ cy load of mulch last weekend, putting a tarp inside the bed extender to keep it from getting into everything and was still able to easily close the toneau. Drove back up the hill to my house like there was nothing back there. :)

Sure, until you have an accident at 75MPH. I mean loaded semi's with proper strapping still loose loads in accidents, so can your bed cover straps. Not an attack on you, under normal driving conditions it's highly unlikely, just saying it's possible. I for one would not do it with plywood/wood planks etc, since the ability to fully secure it is limited.

That's a lot of weight on the tailgate hinges and straps. It seems to have held up just fine. I won't ever have a load like that, so it makes me confident it will stand up to anything I'll ever do to it. 😬
