I'm having an issue on my passenger rear tail light. The front portion pops out and leaves this half inch gap. I can push it and pop it back in but it's a temporary solution and it'll eventually pop back out. When you take the tail light out, there are 2 posts that pop into a couple of grommets and then 2 bolts that bolt in, in the bed. I've tried tightening those bolts but that caused it to pop out even more from the additioinal tension of tightening the bolts.

Anyone else had this issue? Are the grommets worn out that those 2 posts sit in? Everything looks find when I look at them, but that's just as far as I can tell. I thought about taking off the other tail light to see how it is in there, but was was worried I may cause the same issue to start. I thought better of it. I wonder if you can buy replacement grommets if they are worn?

Anyone got an idea?

Thanks.

Thank you very much. I'm not crazy. Was this a recall I missed?

Oh, the "Lasfit Gap". I haven't replaced any hardware on mine (yet). I put a little strip of 3m foam tape on the opposite side and then I didn't tighten the two screws as tightly as had done (the first time) before. The OEM bayonets are pretty poor, my temporary solution has been in place for a year so far, still holding.

This seems like the easiest/most cost effective route. Those retaining nut/grommets the pegs insert into are $17.85 a pack. So almost $40 to fix. Versus some 3M tape.

It has worked so far for me. I already had the tape lying around. I just checked it's 1/2" wide by about 1/8" thick 2-sided but I didn't pull off the second side, I just wanted to increase the leveraging of the two retaining screws. The bayonets just seem to lose some retention every time the taillight assemblies come out, so I want to avoid that.

It's a TSB from December 2024, wouldn't the dealer fix it at no charge?

I think I found some generic options on Amazon for a bit less and I can have them shipped in 2 days. May try those. I really don't want to mess with going to the dealership. I'm sure it'll end up that route, it always does.

Are they the same as recalls?
Recalls are safety/emissions-related issues that the manufacturer are compelled to repair at their expense under NHTSA oversight.

TSBs are documented repair procedures (and sometimes specific repair components) for an identified common failure that the OEM distributes for their service centers. But this is no different than any other service repair; there's no cost coverage outside of warranty (that would be a Customer Satisfaction Program; CSP).

So if you're outside of the bumper-to-bumper warranty you're likely on the hook for the repair cost.

I am outside that. I did purchase an additional coverage from Ford lasting another 5 years. Just did that a month ago. I imagine they'd take care of it. Its mainly my not wanting to mess with it. I'll look into fixing it myself more than likely.

I had this happen to my truck. Ford fixed it and added some new grommets.

After that, i researched the issue and discovered that the screws were the problem. Seems as though tightening the screws force the tail light to popout. Before you spend money on this, try just loosening the screws first.

Sadly a TSB isn't like a recall.
It's a bulletin that comes out for the service department. Showing them that there may be problems in this area. Ford may or may not cover the expense.

I don't know if the OEM price from Ford has gone down any.
Right after the technical service bulletin came out. I went to the local Ford dealer to see how much OEM parts would be.
This is what the parts department printed out. $608.00 😱
I think I would try to find anything after market.
Good Luck.

I realized that after I tightened them, thinking that was the issue. Only to realize that caused it to pop out even more. So I backed them off. But they still won't sit in there properly.
