The bigger takeaway is if you're rolling around with only $50k property damage on your liability insurance you could get a very rude awakening, especially with the average new vehicle price being some $48k.

If you can't afford better insurance you have no business thinking you can afford a Rivian.

I think people misunderstood. Liability is for when you are at fault for damages to another vehicle. You put yourself at risk of your liability won't cover the car you hit.

Also, go get an umbrella policy. Unless I hit a Bugatti, I'm covered.

reading a bit further in that article>>However, Redditor and fellow Rivian R1T owner Earlgr3yh0t was also rear-ended a few months back, except their rear quarter panel had a basketball-sized dent just below the taillight. They took the R1T to a certified Rivian body shop who said the entire rear quarter panel, as well as some tailgate internals, needed replacing. The total cost of replacing an entire body panel and some tailgate bits was reportedly just over $14,000. So a $42,000 rear bumper replacement seems exorbitant, but Apfelstadt says he's happy with his truck.

I would call the body shop that took the back of the whole dam truck apart "pirates" for lack of a far worse word. I don't believe the intention of Rivian was to strip down the entire rear body of the truck. And $14K was a rip off too....UNLESS the rear drive unit, air lift suspension and a myriad of other high tech parts were severely damaged. Just another article to put down EV's.
