He's got some great deals on Kenwood GMRS radios that are used and reconditioned.
I run Kenwood like what Tim has. Easy to program and great to use.

GMRS license is $70, good for 10 years, good for the entire immediate family, and no test!

I have had HAM radio rigs, I had an engineers license back in the early 70s but I let it lapse when I started working for IBM. Is there a map of the repeaters accessible? I may want to use that rather than a sat phone. Cheaper and faster access to help if needed.

I only do GMRS myself, and can tell you what I know on that.
My Friend Tim is a relatively long time ham guy.

For GMRS repeaters on can go to www.mygmrs.com to find repeaters in your area.
Also one could google for clubs in say your city / area.
