I had a hard tonneau cover. And he like to carry my road bike without taking off any wheel. Here is my solution and it passed my first test this weekend:
The cross bars are not fixed. They are kept in place by the tonneau cover pressure. So it is not too hard to take off the bike carrier, cross bars and the cover to use the whole bed, which is the occasional situation (5% of the time?).
