As someone whose recently done a number on my front bumper (2014 Forester) due to hitting an immobile and very permanent large boulder at relatively low speed (less than 10 mph) I can tell you that it doesn't take much to truly malign your front end.
My less than 10mph smack - shattered the front bumper cover, obliterated the "5mph" bumper and severely bent the actual bumper behind it.
I guess I'm saying looks are deceiving. Not saying it isn't totaled - but $335 in parts and $250 in paint and the Forester is looking almost brand new.
