Ford also offers a hybrid version of its small Maverick pickup. That has been an even greater success, Farley said, with more than half of Maverick buyers — 56% — choosing the $1,500 optional hybrid powertrain over the standard four-cylinder engine.

Comments from Farley after second quarter results.

Sounds like those figures reflect most recent order window. Too bad, only 35% will be available.

Would be a lot more if they offered it in AWD and they could actually produce more than 35% of the total quantity as Hybrids. It's been that way for a while now.
Ford has been working on hybrid constraint items it seems and about time

35% of total production numbers, he's only saying that 56% of the orders they've received have been for a hybrid, there's a difference.

I wonder what it would be like without the stop in production 2020/21. I have to think Hybrids would be a majority by now (at least for the Maverick). Crazy what one year will do. Makes me wonder if they (we?) can ever recover. I think if not by 2030, then it's because they don't want to? I already think that but I'm trying to be rational - it's very hard with my distrust for large corporations and their greed.

I still find it odd they were not charging more for the Hybrid from the start, because everyone else does. Even Toyota does.

the Mav is Fords most successful hybrid much to their shock.
entry level pricing shows me how insecure Ford was at launch. Ford used the base hybrid as a hook, an attention getter, it's always been more expensive to produce.

I’m not convinced the hybrid costs more to produce. There is no doubt the hybrid engine/transmission is substantially cheaper to produce than the turbo 4 with 8 speed. So many less parts, lower stress engine components…. The battery levels it back up a bit, but still likely less cost to build overall. Ford never prices vehicles at a loss, so the $20k XL was profitable.

The original pricing probably reflected Ford marketing’s long held position that anything “EcoBoost” was considered a premium offering with premium pricing. Their complete pricing reversal shows they suddenly discovered customers see hybrids as more premium, so adjusted pricing accordingly. But the manufacturing cost is still the same, thus the hybrid has suddenly become very profitable.

Sounds like Farley wants more of that juice now, so expect any Ford hybrid product going forward to be premium priced. EcoBoost is the new economy offering!

I think it was done for publicity and they knew exactly what they were doing. "... Comes with Hybrid drive train - Standard Equipment..." got a lot of free press and attention. The truck's size immediately attracted people who had long been hoping for a smaller truck for non-major hauling that's easy to drive and park and gets better mileage than the giant gas-guzzler trucks. And the "4-door-with-a-bed" Hybrid attracted existing hybrid owners whose current Priuses, etc. are getting old. Once the truck became a hit, Ford quietly raised the price. And it's still very competitive with other Hybrid vehicles currently for sale, even at the higer price.

Most likely due to CAFE requirements and the large number of big ice vehicles Ford builds. I figure they will soon be pushing hybrid 250 or ? when batteries come more available even if it only helps mpg 2-6.

I'm really happy to see Ford has finally seen the light on hybrid demand, at least on the Maverick. I just read on Ford Authority, that they're discontinuing the hybrid for the non-law enforcement Explorers. Low demand or need the battery components to make more Mavericks? I don't know. But I do think Ford will provide many more hybrids in their line going forward.

Not sure, but I suspect that the 2024 Ranger now coming standard with Aluminum wheels was to help increase the steelie production for the Mavericks too.

Supply chain issues have had an impact on deliveries.
Why would Ford choose to hold back production on their most fuel efficient vehicles in light of the CAFE requirements?
