I test drove and ordered a Maverick while my wife was out of town. She finally got to test drive one last weekend, and said it was like her Flex she used to have. I first thought “No, it’s not.” But it pretty much is a Flex with a bed.

Definitely an Escape with a bed.

We are just going to act like the Flex never happened. Nothing to see here folks! The "F" bomb was never dropped.
What was the flex all about? I could never figure out why it even existed.

They had the PT Cruiser, Dodge Nitro and vehicles like that around that time. Plus FORD was trying to bring the euro Renault style MPV's to America without them looking like a van or the bigger SUV's. Now we have the 4 door Escapes and vehicles that essentially birthed out of those mini SUV's, called crossovers. Essentially, there was a desire to have square mini SUV's at the time and FORD went full send on the classic woody look trying to one up GM and Dodge.

Proportionately it is much closer to the Flex than the Escape. Just 3" too narrow. Put a cab height cap on a Maverick and it looks like a flex!

I’ve always liked the look of the flex, but if I’m going to get full size truck mileage I’m getting a full size truck.

b/c Americans are too stupid to buy wagons!
They want it to be "SUV" like - you know, worse handling, oversized (yet same cargo capacity), and horrible mpg - and we can charge them more for it!!!

I always liked the Flex from afar. I thought it was pretty purist from a styling point of view. It said "this is what I am" with great honesty. Clean, unadorned lines. More vehicles should do that. Maybe more people too.

Because station wagons are awesome. Especially when available with AWD and twin turbos.

My dad had 2 of em. He traded up the second time to platinum because he got a deal. They were great family haulers and could tow a light camper. Had good tech and lots of luxury for their time.

The main thing with the Flex is, at least on paper, it has the room of an Expedition while being cheaper/more compliant by virtue of unibody. Although that Ford mid-size architecture/powertrain has a lot of issues like the tendency to cook the PTU oil if you don't change it every 30k miles and the dreaded $2000+ timing chain driven water pump job. Plus the looks are a bit divisive with its boxy, oversized station wagon schtick at the time that segment was dying a slow death.

The maverick is really an Australian "ute" styled like a truck. It's f***ing brilliant and is, IMHO, the best value on the market....but it's totally a ute.

They were big in California, but only popular in Cali.

Maybe I should just get a used Flex while I'm waiting 600+ days for the Maverick.
If it had a frame instead of unibody, chop the roof and toss the third row. 😆
