Hi I was wondering if the Mav has a cell phone connection. If so is it something that you have to pay for? Tied to a specific carrier? Or does it only connect via a wifi connection.

Is it something you need? What features would I loose if I don't get it. Tied to a specific carrier?

AFAIK The data plan is through Ford and offers hotspot to any devices within/around the vehicle. It will also automatically send metadata on your vehicle usage and drive patterns - this happens without an active plan, the active plan only covers hotspot access to devices without their own cellular service.

all of the top of my head of course, the manual goes into more and can be found online publicly

The data plan, which is through AT&T, enables the radio to function as a wi-fi hotspot to connect other devices to.

The same phone modem also is used for the remote FordPass services like remote start and reporting odometer, tire pressure, fuel level, and oil life status for free. Of course that also comes with reporting back other telemetry to Ford to do Things with which some take umbrage with.

It can also also connect to Wi-Fi for routing the FordPass data or downloading radio updates. The manual wording isn't 100% clear but I believe it may not be able to act as a repeater/hotspot off that connection.

It is an ATT PLAN.

The truck will connect to your phone for hands free calling.

The service is through AT&T in the US and Bell in Canada. There is a 3 month free trial through AT&T in both countries. It can be activated through the FordPass app. After the 3 month trial it can be converted to a monthly service for a fee. Once active your vehicle will be a wifi hotspot which is used the same as any other wifi service.

Don't need another bill. Especially with a different carrier. Can I connect to a home wi fi for updates and such? Will Ford Pass still work? Really don't need my truck to be a wifi Hotspot. I can use my phone for that. Sorry for all the questions and apprecite the responses.

Yes, you can connect your home wifi for updates, and, yes, the FordPass app will still work.

Thanks All! Seems like the only thing it does is give you a Hotspot in the Vehicle.

The cost is $20/mo and you can add it to your current plan if you use AT&T. The add says you get 22 gb before they throttle you back.
I use about 2 gb/mo with my phone and stream Spotify most of the time while driving. I'm sure there is a good reason for having the hotspot but I don't know what it is. I have not even subscribed for the 3 free gb.
