If someone hits their shin or bumper on my hitch they’re too damn close to my truck.

Do y'all just leave a hitch in all the time? Someone told me that it can help with low speed rear end accidents; they hit the hitch instead of your bumper.

What is the best kind of "generic" hitch to get? If I'm going to get one to leave in there, I'd want the most commonly used size.

Thanks in advance!
Have you ever knocked your shin on one in a parking lot? Take it out - everyone's shins will thank you.

I would check with your state/local laws, it is illegal to leave it in when not using it. Don't hate the messenger, I do not agree with it, just wanting to put it out there.

I will be putting the ball under the back seat or in the cubby in the bed, which ever is a better fit and use of space.

Leave it and be careful not to smack your shin.

Because I’m going to be that guy that does both.

But reading these kinda makes me happy i leave mine in.. Wonder how many phone zombies my rig got.. Thats epic!

And before you get your panties in a bunch if you hit my hitch you are at fault. Its not like my hitch was moving. Some people just want to blame anyone.

I remember my dad's Ranger getting rear ended when he had the hitch in there. We were stopped to let an ambulance pull out of a side street and the lady behind didn't realize in time. Probably a 10-15 mph impact. Ranger didn't have a scratch on it but the car had a huge dent in their front metal bumper from the trailer hitch, probably damaged the radiator too. The hitch definitely saved the Ranger from some body work in this instance.

However that was back in the 90s... Nowadays, bumpers are all plastic. Only thing the hitch is going to do is pierce their bumper and radiator and the main body of their car will still make impact to your equally soft plastic bumper and precious tailgate.

So if you're looking to use it as crash protection, I'd say its pretty worthless for that with todays cars. Plus what everyone else has said about someone steeling it or bumping into it...

Get a hitch plug with your favorite sports team logo or something on it and store your hitch elsewhere.

Sure, leaving it offers some protection if you get rear ended but the A hole who hit me will be the one paying for it not me. Don't leave the hitch in. Your shins will also thank you.

I guess I never walk that close to someone's vehicle, but unless you tow every week take it out, your will hit you shins EVERYTIME you put something in the box.

I have had the ball on my tow vehicle for two years without a lock without issues. Even had my cat stolen and they cared less about the hitch/ball. I wont be leaving one on the maverick but its not my tow vehicle.

Never heard of or had issue running into someone hitch, maybe cause i been social distancing vehicles before it was the cool thing to do... And i know my surrounding before backing a vehicle..
Twice I have had trucks with their hitch installed back into me while I was parked. One cost them $500 deductible. The other was a hit and run.
Don't be a male donkey. Remove your hitch when done.
