Is your hybrid engine loud?

I have a 24 Lariat hybrid. On acceleration sometimes the engine is quiet and sometimes it is really loud. Seems to be louder when fully warmed up. Has anyone else noticed this?

Mine is loud on cold start accelerating up my street. I think it's because of the Atkinson Cycle engine.

The loudness is probably related to whether you are getting any assist from electric at that moment.

On a cold start, with a decent battery charge, you accelerate almost exclusively with electricity. This saves pollution while your engine and catalytic converter heats up.
Your truck will be really quiet as the engine is under minimal load and rpms will be low.

It's a crap shoot.

If by chance you do a cold start with a really low battery, it can't accelerate your truck, the engine will work harder, even harder than "normal" to warm up, accelerate, and recharge your battery at the same time. Your truck will be much louder because it is under load and running at higher rpms.

I have a 23 lariat hybrid and it's quiet. It's never been loud. It's quiet and smooth. The only sounds I hear are the electrical sounds on deceleration and braking.

Me: 24 Lariat hybrid = it seems a little louder when cold. Unrelated, I find if I use 91 octane the engine is a little quieter but not worth the cost difference.

Have you checked the insulation pillow in the fender about where the emblem is? I installed side marker lights and had to push it out of the way, forgot to relocate the insulation to it's full height. I noticed an immediate increase in engine noise. Use something soft like a long wooden paint stir stick to reposition the insulation if you need to.

When the engine has to kick on b/c you have air conditioning running or something like that to charge the battery, it'll be loud for a bit and then it settles down. You can see this working when you change your dash to the MPG view and it spikes up even though your foot is real light on the pedal

"Tractor mode" was due to an actual issue in some of the threads. It's not supposed to do that as a general rule.

Totally normal that the ICE is loud when the engine cold, IMO. The cylinders share intake air and I believe that causes the vibrations. When things warm up, it's quieter.

Thanks for all the replies. Mine is definitely louder than my friends XLT, but it runs great and gets 44mpg so I guess I shouldn’t worry about it.
