I took some pictures under the hood of my Hybrid and saw this rusted item to the left of the engine.

Is this normal or a potential problem?

By "left" I assume driver's side? Looks like a cast iron transmission mount; some surface rust is normal.
Sorry: Left side of the 2.5L gas engine while looking at it from the front of the truck.

Engine mount makes sense. Thanks

I wouldn't think a vehicle that is only a month old should have a part with rust on it under the hood. Most parts should have a basic coat of something to prevent this. It appears to be a heavy part that shouldn't affect its function.

As strange as it sounds a light coat of surface rust actually protects the part from further corrosion. If you were to wire brush a cast iron part like that the rust would come back with a vengence

In fact, the bluing on guns is nothing more than a pretty chemical rust that keeps deep rust away.

don't worry about it. (I know, that's real hard to do, especially on a new vehicle)

I don't think that is rust. I believe that part is aluminum as well which doesn't rust. Its some kind of glop. Look at it.

I agree with vezpa, that does not look like rust to me.

My non hybrid Maverick has this on the left hand side and it's an oil/sludge substance. Working now but will snap some photos, mine is not nearly as bad .

Typical cost saving of not powder coating the steel parts. Some lithium spray rust protection will do the job. Especially since that mount is bolted to the painted frame.

My concern over time is that rust will begin to propagate to anything steel or iron it is coming into contact with.

New design with old school cost cutting.
i will be coating that part or any bare part with rust proof paint or a rust coating.

Anyone near or drive over road salt this part will be bright orange with in 1 year Guaranteed if left untreated.

not a failure but more of a eyesore and like what the heck is happening to my new truck.
Ps also look under the carriage for other frame related rust spots. Exhaust pipes and mounting points usually rust and are typical and normal. No need to coat them as heat will burn anything you put on off.

So I looked at mine further... I really believe this part got sprayed or something during either when the part was made or during assembly with something... I took a shop towel and it did not smear or remove sludge, no dust particles from rust, or anything of the sort. It is on the part and doesn't appear to be coming from anything or anywhere. I will use these photos and keep an eye over time to see if it changes.

Further thinking about it... could it be spill over from the black circle piece during assembly/manufacturing? Maybe they assemble the part and then coat that part and we have overspray? Just theory crafting over here.

It does look like overspray of some type of material.
