It was my first time as well. Dealer never asked me for a deposit even after I offered one.
You cancel before if goes on to production.
If it is to late it won't be a problematic. Dealer will probably be happy you don't take it.

In this market they might already have a buyer lined up as soon as you tell them you can not take it.

One word...patience! That's what it takes! Honestly, the process was simple enough to get started. Just find a dealer you're comfortable working with.
