Hybrid in cold climate

Does the hybrid have any issues getting up to temperature or providing heat to the cab in the winter? I’m in Canada, so winter can be as low as -20°C (-4°F) on some days.

Reason I ask is a friend of a friend has a hybrid (not a maverick) and says he doesn’t get a lot of heat when it’s really cold out.

Mine will heat up, but I don't think it's as quick or robust as my previous ICE 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The fan also doesn't blow very hard even at full blast. The Trac produced blowdryer-like volume. I also notice even when fully warmed the operating temp on the Maverick gauge is way over to the cold side not even reaching the first mark on the gauge.

I can’t speak for my unbuilt mythical unicorn ‘23 Maverick yet, but our 1st generation Prius needed it’s radiator partially blocked via old school cardboard trick. They were known for poor winter heat without it. That was a 2001-2003 model. By the next generation starting in 2004, which we owned as well, it was no longer an issue.

In Canada you should get the lux pkg with heated seats/steering wheel. That will make a big difference in how quickly you feel comfortable. We have the same in our Chevy Volt. I doubt if we'll ever own a vehicle without them. Even our 07 Madza MX5 has heated seats and it's only driven May to Oct.

So far mine does take a while for the engine to heat up, but I do mostly short trips with it. I am a little surprised that the system reverts to electric mode so often even when the engine temp is cold. Good thing my heated seats and steering wheel are very warm!

My last hybrid (2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid) simply would not start the gas engine when stopped to maintain the cabin heat. So if I parked for any length of time in the winter, it just got very cold. It would start the ICE to maintain the air conditioning though.

I find mine blows as hard as a leaf blower if you have only the vent on and the air is not shared to windscreen or floor. It will blow your hair back.

That said; heat comes from "hot water" heated by the engine burning gas.

It will keep you warm at the cost of burning more gas. It will run the gas engine at stoplights to keep you warm if necessary.

There was a fellow here from near Saskatoon that has a hybrid Maverick, I don't recall him having any complaints about heat. I find it heats up fine here on the west coast, but we typically only drop to -7°C, sometimes down to -13°C. The hybrid does have an electric heat strip that supplements the heater core from the engine, I find it heats up much faster than my older hybrid did, about as fast as any ICE only vehicle I've had. The Maverick has shutters that close off the rad allowing it to warm up fast, so it shouldn't be a big issue. Also in Canada all Mavericks ship with a block heater (at least the 2022s did), so you can use that to prep the vehicle.

I own both EB and hybrid and I gotta say the hybrid doesn't produce heat as hot as the EB. 72 degrees in the hybrid is equivalent to 70 degrees in the EB. Feel pretty toasty and fast in the EB vs. the hybrid.

The thing I love about the XLT Hybrid Lux package with the heated seats and steering wheel is that when you remote start in the cold, it automatically turns on the heated seats and the heated steering wheel. I have never had a heated steering wheel, and in the cold it is a game changer.

No issues heating up but man that heated steering wheel like casanewt said is a VERY welcome addition that I've never experienced until now. The MPG is trash in -20 though so that's something that I've noticed

I'm near Buffalo NY. My Maverick has done fine in the cold so far (but we haven't had anything lower than like 15F/-9C yet this year). I've had other Ford hybrids before and have never had an issue w/ heating the cab in the cold. Even in -23C / -10F temps.

The fuel economy obviously takes a big hit. Having to remote start to de-ice. And the engine will run a lot more. I was averaging 40.5mpg. It probably will be in the low 30s once real winter sets in.
Heated steering wheel and heated seats are a plus.... you can keep the heat in the cab a bit lower, which allows you to gain a little more advantage from the hybrid/electric driving.

The engine will always kick on if necessary to heat to cab.

I have the same problem of cold engine temp gage that won't break free of the 'C'
