Here is the question......... With the Hybrids having an "Electronic Button" to depress to open the gas filler door, what happens IF/WHEN you lose all power on the vehicle as in a dead battery OR anything goes wrong with the electronic parts on the release ? is there a MANUAL release that can be used to open it ? Can't seem to find the answer in the manual ... RESPONSES ???

I do not know exactly what happens when the button is pushed but it must be something has to be done before the actual door is opened because I read somewhere that the door may not open for 15-20??? Seconds. I would assume tank is pressurized and has to be bled off? Just guessing.

Interesting that method isn't mentioned in the print/PDF edition. That only mentions the pry tool that is included with the jack in the roadside emergency kit to lever the door open.

So much for that feature being a fuel theft deterrent.

I noticed that too! Only the html version mentions it.

Because it's not. The locking is so you need to intentionally signal to the vehicle that you want to fuel and it can depressurize the tank in preparation. The tank pressurization reduces fuel vaporization loss for effectively higher fuel efficiency.

Oh, I know, but these days of $6 gas, the night crawlers are looking for easy-open gas tanks. It’s still easy with the cable release.

So you believe that thieves read owners manuals when it seems that most poster's here can't be bothered to read it.

It also is for the hybrid’s fuel tank pressurization system, not theft deterrence, as @Darnon noted above.

Whole bunch of them figured out how to swipe Hyundai's and Kia's with a thumb drive. This appears to be even easier.

'Open the gas door' is a pretty different magnitude than 'physically start and steal the entire car because, whoops, no key authentication'.

And it's a moot point anyways as a theft deterrent since the retaining pin just pops out anyways if you force it.

And unless someone is targeting you, it’s a deterrence step making them more likely to move on to a vehicle with a fully manually opening fuel door, like an EB Maverick.

Not sure how opening fuel doors, not a widespread concern, is comparable to two brands of vehicles known to typically have 0 engine immobilizer (which all Fords have had for decades), and thus are incredibly easy to steal and use for nefarious purposes.

In the manual the first step is to "Switch the ignition on."

I don't have mine to test but I suspect it's not opening with the manual release unless the ignition is on.
